We spent the last week sweating in our room because that stupid motion sensor on the ceiling keeps killing the AC while we're at class. We tried the classic trick of tying a ribbon to the desk fan so it would flutter in front of the sensor, but the green light just stayed dark. Turns out these sensors are way pickier than I thought and a thin piece of fabric doesn't have enugh surface area or heat signature to trigger the PIR. I ended up taping a small Mylar balloon to the oscillating fan instead. The reflective surface and the larger body of the balloon moving back and forth actually did the trick. Walked back in after a three-hour lab today and the room was actually a comfortable 70 degrees for once. If you're dealing with those circular ceiling units, skip the string and go for something with more bulk. It’s such a relief not walking into a literal sauna every afternoon.

I ran into the same issue with the Siemens occupancy sensors in my studio last summer. No matter how much I moved my desk chair, the AC whould cut out every twenty minutes if I wasn't literally jumping around. I tried the ribbon idea too, but those PIR sensors are specifically looking for a heat differential, wich a piece of fabric just doesn't provide.
What finally worked for me was using a small, motorized toy—one of those battery-operated "lucky cats" with the waving arm. I taped a reusable HotHands pack to the back of the waving hand. The combination of the rhythmic motion and the actual heat source tricked the sensor into thinking a person was in the room.
Before that, I was coming home to a wall of 85-degree humidity. It’s a bit of a hacky setup, but it beats paying for a smart thermostat override that my landlord wouldn't allow anyway. If the balloon trick ever stops working for you, adding a little warmth to the moving object is the way to go.
I actualy stopped messing with physical props once I realized most of these Inncom or Honeywell wall units have a hidden bypass. The balloon trick is clever, but I hated leaving an extra fan running all day just to trick a sensor. In my old apartment, we had those E528 thermostats. If you hold down the "display" button and then tap "off" and "up" in the right sequence, it enters a service mode where you can disable the PIR logic for about 24 to 48 hours at a time. It is a much cleaner solution than taping things to the furniture or ceiling vents, and you don't have to worry about the balloon losing its static or drifting out of range. If your model doesn't have a keypad override, I found that a simple battery-operated "drinking bird" toy placed near a lamp works better than a balloon. The motion of the liquid inside the glass creates enought of a thermal shift as it oscillates to keep the infrared sensor engaged. It saved me from many humid afternoons when the landlord refused to adjust the timeout settings.
This is seriously life-changing info! I’ve been sitting in my own sweat for weeks because of that stupid ceiling eye. Since we're talking about heat signatures, do you think a big lava lamp whould give off enugh of a signal if I just put it on a rotating display stand? Also, super random, but does anyone know if the blue LED light on those portable fans interferes with the sensor's infrared at night?
Lava lamps probaly won't cut it. They get hot, yeah, but PIR sensors need that heat to acutally cross the diferent zones in the lens to trigger. If it's just sitting there glowing, it won't do much. I've had luck with an old oscillating fan and a warm bottle of water taped to the top. It's got the bulk and the heat, and it's cheaper than buying a motorized cat or a lava lamp. Just make sure it's secure so it doesn't fly off and break somethig while you're at work.
