Speedfit "o" ring

Seeing IMM's recent thread on Speedfit joint failure (lol), I thought it would be wise to ask the group about a problem I had yesterday. Plumbing in the new bath tap using Speedfit flexible tap connectors from Homebase (£9 each- ouch!). The first one connected just fine, but the second felt rather peculiar as it went in. I could just tell that the joint wasn't seated correctly, so I undid it and saw that the "o" ring had been dislodged. Admittedly I didn't shove the pipe in absolutely straight (tight space, tired etc.) so that's why the ring came out of its seating, but I managed to get it back in position with a quick poke using a screwdriver. When re inserted more carefully, the joint felt fine and has not leaked. What I'm wondering is, will the security of the joint be compromised because of the balls up? Are the "o" rings held in place by some kind of adhesive or sealant that has given way because of my mishandling, or do they just sit there in the groove?

Cheers, Jim.

First off, is it a JG SpeedFit fitting? There are several flexi tap connectors on the market not made by JG.

But to answer your question - in all the fittings I've seen the O ring just sits in a groove. In SpeedFit fittings, the groove is too deep to dislodge the ring in the way you describe. It's really quite difficult to remove it even intentionally.

Let's hope you have not cipped the O ring with the screwdriver.

Well it happened to me and now to this poor chap. Poor design and manufacture. The O ring is quite a way down the fitting. The pipe would have lots of fitting around it supposedly to guide it and keep it square on before it meets the O ring. Homebase have all their pushfit fittings made by Speedfit. If it looks like Speedfit, it will be Speedfit.

This 'poor chap' fitted it wrong to start with, he admitted that bit. You, on the other hand, are a bodge merchant who can't see what he did wrong because you are a cluless troll.

Mr Pole,

Bean, he never fitted it wrong at all. He pushed it in, what you are supposed to do. He didn't tango on it, or God forgive do Morris dancing on it.

Listen f****it, he rammed it in at a jaunty angle, that's wrong. That's what you did as well but you won't admit it. Pushing it home squarely would be the correct way to do it.

Now Bean, you obviously know nothing about these fittings. The O ring is way down the fitting after the grab ring. The fitting guides the pipe and keeps it in place. You can't push it in at 45 degrees, only one way and that is the way the fitting allows you to push it in. The fitting acts as a guide.

Appalling! Mr Pole, you are appalling.

Dear IMM what is it about manufacturers instructions, tips, guidelines & faq's you seem unable to comprehend? Faced with instructions such as those below I suspect you would attempt fixing using a club hammer and pliers.

From a StrongTie instruction sheet; "INSTALLATION : Use all specified fasteners. See General Notes. Screws should be turned, not hammered, into 3mm pre-drilled holes."

Should we take anyone seriously who is named after a jug?

Well one of us definitely doesn't.

Where did I say anything about 45 degrees, there are more angles than

0 and 45 degrees you know.

Just that, a guide. Not a substitute for professional worksmanship.

Lovely, I like it when people say that.

And that is clearly you.

You don't say....

Bean, you clearly know nothing about these fittings.

Or we're brilliant and he's gullible:-) the thing is he's not clever or subtle enough to be a troll which leaves me thinking that he really believes everything he posts which makes him one sad sorry individual who ought to get out more, the volume of stuff he posts under this and other pseudonym's indicates that he spends far too much time typing tripe and replying to tripe than is healthy for a sound well balanced lifestyle.

It's light relief actually, I find it quite amusing. It's the sort of thing that happens on building sites up and down the land, it's called banta, or possibly banter, amusing either way.

How the f*ck did you work that one out, I'm not the one who cant push two bits of plastic together without getting wet.

I do you know.

I'm not the one who can't operate a pushfit fitting correctly.
