Short Bed - 5ft9in or 5ft6in

Hi,

I have a space in a studio flat where it would be good to have a bed, but it is only 5ft9in long.

Standard sizes seem to be 6ft and 6ft3in.

Is it possible to get 5ft9in or 5ft6in beds local to Manchester, or might I have to make one?

Don't forget you'll need to find a matching short matress, too, which you won't be able to make yourself!

Argos have several single+guestbed combination where the single is a standard size and the guestbed is slightly shorter so it stored under the single bed. Airsprung divan is 175cm. The divans look a bit silly without the guestbed though. Page 742 in paper catalogue

(The idea is put the guestbed in the studio flat and use the single bed elsewhere or sell it off.)

They also have shortie/junior divans at 175cm - page 744 - item nos

664/1119, 664/1126.

Look at children's beds. I think the one we had was about this size. I would have said try Courts but not sure of their current trading status.

do make one of specials, however they are based in Grimsby but you may be able to get them to deliver. Good luck!

You could try and find out where builders who equip showhomes get their furniture from. They seem to specialise in finding very small pieces of furniture to make the tiny rooms look bigger.

Thanks for those - probably the way to go.

Hi

I've had this problem for years in our 3rd bedroom. Usually bought a standard bed & cut the rails down, mattress will usually fit.

Not to mention a short mistress.

take a wood bed, remove one end, trim it down, refit end.

Mattresses vary in real size a fair bit, by meansuring them rather than relying on catalog size statements you should get one to fit.

Child beds are 2'6", which is a poor substitute for a 3' bed.

Or someone that doesn't stretch out. I'm 6', but have no problems sleeping in a 5' bed.

Most beds are quite easy to cut down, but if you can fix to the walls it would be very easy to fit a couple of rails to take a ready-made slatted base and this would avoid losing any of the available length. You might find that a 6ft mattress would jam into the space without a problem.

Try Wild's in Rochdale, they will order you a Divan and Matress in whatever size you like, very reasonable too, I got one for the youngest's box room for about £110, you can choose a bed at whatever price you want and they can get it built to your spec.
