Re-fixing handle to hollow door / non-metric bolts.

Suggestions please for re-fixing handle to hollow hardboard wardrobe door (no lock-block).

The handle was fixed with a dowel screw (machine thread to wood thread) like this:

it's worked loose over the years.

I thought that putting a bolt right through the door from the back would be an easy solution but the knob has an old imperial (?) thread

-- not sure what exactly but the pitch of the thread doesn't match metric bolts.

So any other suggestions? A source of imperial (?) bolts that doesn't involve buying a box of 100 (and how to identify the thread)? Some sort of cavity fixing that would work on a single thickness of hardboard? A solution that doesn't involve buying a whole new set of matching handles would be good.

Thanks in advance.

I assome its the wood screw bit that has worked loose? Car body filler? No nails might work.

Buy or borrow a metric tap that is close enough to the size of the screw/bolt you intend to use and tap a new thread.

Use a smaller screw/bolt and a metal filler of the /belzona type to pack the knob hole.

remove existing screwbolt, mix up car body filler, stuff in hole, and resinsert screwbolt.

Yes, it's that easy.

I would have suggested he used plastic wood but I think he has already drilled a hole all the way through for a bolt

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll give the car body filler a go.
