preserving new old stock car wings....

Doing up a doer upper.

Amazingly acquired nos original wings! rust free! finished in factory black primer.

i intend to fit them to the vehicle and painting etc in due course.

What's the bestest way to stop the inner side rusting? for as long as practically possible.... Before I attach them what products techniques etc would be advisable?

TIA

Strip the transport primer back to bare metal. Etch-prime them. Top coat them. Stone-chip them. Wax them. Then regularly inspect them, clean them, re-wax them.

That black paint so often found on replacement panels isn't a proper primer - just something to stop them getting surface rust during storage. It should be totally removed before painting properly.

A decent acid etch primer onto clean bright steel is the best start, followed by the appropriate finish. Underside of wings etc are best treated with a specialist protection for that job.

If any areas of the panel are welded to others, use only a decent weld through primer there.

What's the best way to remove it? A solvent, or mechanically?

At one time I'd have used Nitromors. But the active ingredient that used was 'banned' (at least for DIY) and the current version is totally useless.

So sanding off is probably the easiest DIY option - and provides a decent key for the new primer.

If you have a bead blasting facility handy, that would save a deal of work. Sand blasting can do more damage.

Strip inside to bare metal and powder coat them. Anoint with something like Texaco Rust Proof Compound L periodically.

I always found this to be pretty good.

actually galvanising is ultimately the best solution if you can get it done. THEN powder coat of you must.

They will warp if you get them dip galvanised, Metco gun spray zinc coating is less likely to warp but is still a heat process and can leave a rough surface. Personally I'd give them a liberal coating of Shell Ensis which is a white spirit soluble rust inhibiting oil used by the military to preserve stuff outdoors. I used it extensively when I put my workshop into storage for a year and it worked a treat (except the bits I missed :( )
