TMC formulated on Wednesday :

I dislike them intensely, mostly the extra width they need and I find good observation beats mirror extensions hand down.

You can get the clamp on (with two straps) type, but there is a new type which fits on the existing mirror lens by suction. These have the advantage that your electric mirror adjuster will work with the extensions. The disadvantage might be that they add extra load onto a relatively delicate mechanism. They come with a bit of string to loop around your existing mirror, which suggest they also tend to become unstuck.

I have towed our caravans for 20 years firstly with a 2.5 tdi Shogun and then with a 3.0 Isuzu Trooper both of which were SWMBO's cars

Unfortunately SWMBO now has difficulty climbing up into the higher vehicles. She now has a smaller car and I am using my car for towing

As the caravans all had front and rear windows and because of the height of the above vehicles I had good vision to the rear

Never bothered with extending mirrors before and could not find any big enough to fit the Shogun in the early days

Need them now hence the query

I agree never wanted to use them but regulations require adequate vision to th rear of the vehicle which I will not have with the lower car

duct-tape the car onto a monster truck chassis?

You might want to consider CCTV. I put a fixed system on a horse trailer (main camera inside to watch horses, but switchable to a second from the dashboard monitor). Got mine from a guy called green4go (or something similar) via eBay who sells nice kit at reasonable prices. Wireless link from camera to car. When set up well they are good for reversing too.

And just how would you attach one of those to extend the external mirror without using an angle grinder, No-Nails, Gaffer tape or silicone sealant?

Please explain, using diagrams as needed - and include all swear words in the appropriate places.

That now brings the subject "on topic" for the group in the Do It Yourself sense, in that it now incorporates a theory into practical usage.

Go on Dennis, have a go!! *eg*

I have had a number of types over the years, but am impressed with Milenco Grand Aero. Personally I would always have convex lenses. Especially on the nearside, a flat mirror has far too small a field of view.

Good reviews, but they look like they might be putting quite a bending moment on a plastic mirror cowling frame, even if they are well engineered to avoid stress concentrations.

These appear to be about the best unless I go for the emuk specials which look brilliant but 110UKP is a lot steep
