While Oracle have plenty of involvement in open source projects, I'd hardly regard it as all positive ...

Microsoft is changing strategy. Once upon a time, it was all Microsoft or nothing. They've realised that doesn't work in business, and individual Microsoft business units are now allowed to do their own thing.

Another example is SQL Server. It competes against a number of other products, but it was never going to get much further in market share while it was restricted to Windows only, whilst all the competitive products run on everything. Hence the announcement that SQL server will be released for Linux. That will enable SQL server to gain market share that it couldn't beforehand.

Is this not going to be a culture shock for many system admins who at the moment since times lost in the mists, have refused to put open source software on their systems, even faced with the evidence that it seems not to matter. Brian
