Indeed. In Sydney there are very many public loos. They all have tiled "wet floors" (ie, with a drain hole) and low level taps, so they're easy to clean. And they all have yellow steel "sharps bins" so addicts can dispose of needles safely.

The clean, quiet, plentiful, loos of Sydney were much better than the filthy, noisy, infrequent, broken, loos of most UK towns.

Obviously the local government there realises that humans have a need to empty their bladders every now and again.

I am always amazed on reading of smashed public toilets that the items broken were - made of China. I imagine some get broken just through rough treatment and them maybe jumped upon to get a bit of a kick from it.

Melbourne flats have sealed bathroom floors and a floor drain so that a mishap doesn't flood the people below. The washing machine is usually (IME) in the bathroom.

Blue lights and sharps bins are common in Melbourne public loos.

Last year, our local council decided to close the only set of public toilets at a large shopping centre to save money. The reasoning was that they weren't used often and people could use the few available in nearby [private] cafes/pubs etc.

Needless to say, there was a bit of an uproar. The council guys put their thinking caps on, and decided that the toilets could stay open, but money would need to be found from somewhere. The money for the flower displays and their watering and upkeep was diverted to pay for the toilets, and IIRC, the council seemed to want to blame the public for wanting toilets instead of flowers and inferred that the shopping centres would be worse off due to lack of flowers, and not worse off with no toilets.

Funnily enough, they closed a lot of public toilets in Brighton a few years ago. A lot of them became flower shops...!

(not sure if they still are...bottom of Elm Grove, and Palmeira Square, come to mind. Anyone?)

There used to be public toilets close to near every inner London tube station - although I'd guess they pre-dated most. All round here have gone

- with just the odd super loo replacing them. I'd guess you're expected to use pub toilets since they're now open all day. But many of those have closed down too.
