Logbook not filled in after heater installation

Following an insurance claim, my house has recently had majo

underpinning and,as part of the refurbishment, a combi boiler heatin system has been installed. The old boiler was replaced, some ol pipe-work and radiators retained and some new pipework and radiator added.

The boiler logbook has not yet been filled in. I have asked th contractors many times now to do this as it obviously seems important but each time they seem unwilling and give answers that do not make an sense. I have come to the point where I believe that they know somethin I don't but are not telling me.

1) What is the significance of the logbook. 2) Am I right in thinking it needs to be filled in and that Buildin Regulations actually require this? 3) What are the possible reasons for their not wanting to fill it in? 4) If one possible reason is because they know it does not conform t Building Regulations, would this mean they have behaved illegally i putting such a system in? If so,are there serious penalties for this What would be the consequences for them if it doesn't conform t regulations?

Questions, questions. Thanks for any help. I would like to know wha points to make to them in a letter if they continue to argue tha filling in the logbook isn't that important.

Cheers

Mik

A log book? Logging what exactly?

Why do you think it is important?

What answers do they give you? Then we can explain them to you in simple English.

You need to tell them why YOU think it is important and WHY you want it filled in. If you do not know that and have no reasons, but need to ask here, then you sound like a common trouble maker with nothing better to do! Think about it, you insist they do something but you don't know why.

They should be CORGI registered. If they aren't, contact the insurance company straight away.

If they are CORGI registered, I'd (not sure which):

a) Give them a deadline before I contact CORGI b) Just contact CORGI

Who installed it, their corgi number etc

If your insurance company is paying then who is checking the work on their behalf? Ask them about it.

Mark,

Thanks for the reply.

Some answers to your questions:

Q.A log book? Logging what exactly?

A.To give it its full title:

The "Benchmark Installation,Commissioning and Service Record Log Book

Q.Why do you think it is important?

A. Quoting from the Log-book face:

1 Please keep the Log Book in a safe place for future reference.

2 This Log Book is to be completed in full by the competent person(s who commissioned the boiler and associated equipment and then handed t the customer. When this is done, the Log Book is a commissionin certificate that can be accepted as evidence of compliance with th appropriate Building Regulations.

3 Failure to install and commission this applicance to th manufacturer?s instructions may invalidate the guarantee.

From the Boiler User's Instructions, under section headed "Ga regulations":

Current Gas Safety (Installation and use) Regulations:-

...the Benchmark logbook must be fully completed by the installer o installation of the boiler....

From the Boiler's "Installation and servicing instructions" unde "Commissioning",in bold......

"When commissioning the boiler, ensure the Benchmark logbook i completed"

Again from the Boiler's "Installation and servicing instructions" :

"IMPORTANT Note: Ensure that the Benchmark Log Book has been completed after th boiler has been installed and commissioned"

All this sounds pretty important to me!

Q. What answers do they give you? Then we can explain them to you i simple English.

A.Thanks but as I said,I could make little sense of their answers; tha is why I recently asked them for an explanation in writing. So far,non has been forthcoming but if I get one I'll post it here.

Q.You need to tell them why YOU think it is important and WHY you wan it filled in.

A.Fair enough. I was hoping to be able to point out to them that ,fo instance,by law, they actually HAD to do so.

Q..If you do not know that and have no reasons, but need to ask here, then you sound like a common trouble maker with nothing better t do!

A. Thanks for that,Mark! As you can see I do have reasons (see above so I hope you'll understand I'm not a common trouble maker.

Q.Think about it, you insist they do something but you don't know why.

A. As you'll see, that isn't true. However, I was interested to know i it CAN be insisted upon. I have no experience at all in the area o plumbing and what regulations cover it,etc.

Sometimes an industry insider who really knows the score can say "I says it's important but it's not really" and be right....sometime however, you can be told complete nonsense.

cheers

Mike

Nothing like a full title to give to Google. It then throws up

formatting link
where the Answer is

"It is good practice to fill out this document, as failure to do so may invalidate the warranty. The logbook has been introduced to encourage the correct installation, commissioning and servicing of domestic central heating systems. By recording all the details that are required in the log book, you can leave the customer with a written record that the central heating system has been installed and commissioned in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions."
