How do I block a (mains) smoke alarm (so my steam cleaner doesn't trigger it)

Or....locate them away from bathrooms, kitchens and laundry rooms ( a broker dryer vent will cause a false....don't ask me how I know....:))

You can cover the detector with kitchen wrap or aluminum foil. Just be sure to uncover it after you're finished.

I live in an area where there are many brown recluse and black widow spiders. It is necessary to fog the interior with pesticide once a month. I made some wooden covers from 1/8 paneling and use masking tape to hold them in place over the smoke detectors during the fogging.

Brown recluses? Why don't you just _move_ ?

(I'm no spider phobic. But those are just too much)

Brown recluses have an "over-blown" reputation... They're not aggressive and only bite when trapped between skin and clothing. Google search "brown recluse" for more information.

Yes, of course....Google would know....harmless.

That hasn't been my experience. In several apartment/condos, we've replaced the electrican supplied ionization smoke alarms with Firex 484 (photo-electrics). The ionization units were mounted so close to the kitchen or bathroom, they were constantly falsing. The photo-electrics solved the problem and the number of tenant complaints to the landlord/strata has dropped significantly. A lot of residential buildings employ ionization detectors (the result of the "low bid wins the job" mentality) even though photo-electrics would fit the occupancy type better.

Yes I'm in UK and no, I don't believe we're taxed "up to the wazoo" - three quarters of the population is spending way too much on themselves while the government feels it needs to keep taxes and public spending/borrowing at a minimum for political and economic reasons. As a result, public services here are mostly run on a shoestring and staff morale is non-existent. It shames us in my view. When you think back to what we used to have, in some ways it seems our public services here are now more akin to a 3rd world country - for example we've closed thousands of hospitals, schools, fire stations and post offices for economic reasons.

Students in UK universities now have to pay a large fee for their tuition as well as paying for their board and lodging, and most are finishing their courses with a gigantic debt to repay. I just think, in one of the richest countries in the world, this is an absolute disgrace. We should be less mean and selfish, and understand the need to invest more in our future. I'd gladly pay another few pence in the £ in tax if I could rely on the government spending it wisely and allowing me to feel proud of my country again.

It's not how likely they are to bite, it's the necrotic aspect to the wound afterwards. Mustard gas heals quicker than a brown recluse bite.

I see what you mean, but I don't agree with you. I think that people should do more for themselves, and not depend on the government so much. It doesn't seem unreasonable to me for someone to have to pay for a university education, room, and board. I also think that if one earns his living, he should be able to "spend way too much on himself" if he so chooses. If you think that the government will ever spend our money wisely, you are hopelessly mistaken. js

Move to where? In New England the ethnic minorities stole my car, robbed me at gunpoint, broke into my house and took everything valuable. How is that safe? I'd rather a brown recluse. At least it is legal to kill them.

Which could be any clothes hanging in your closet. Ever see one of those bites? Nasty. We have a high concentration of them here. In Columbia, TN, a brown recluse killed a 6 year old boy. I know of a couple people around here who have been bitten.

And here in the south it is legal to kill the other varmits, too, if they try to break in. Can't so that in New England.

Move to Texas. It's legal to kill any scumbag that does what you described.

Please read what I said more carefully - I don't think I'm mistaken. We live in different places, with very different culture, history and outlook. What seems reasonable to you appears mean, selfish and very short-sighted to me. And I want to feel proud that this country gives support and opportunity to all who are less than fortunate, which you probably translate into being akin to communism! I don't think we'll ever be able to agree, in fact I can see an argument brewing, so I'm not going to get into a pointless discussion about it, sorry.

The problem is when the government gives support and opportunity the end result is a population which has less support and opportunity and no incentive to find it
