Concrete anchor bolts

A question re these bolts. I was using them to fix a post to a wall for a gate, I eventually got it sorted but suspect I maybe wasnt doing something right as I had to fiddle about to tighten them. I drilled the hole into the wall using the correct size of masonry drill as per the instructions (14mm), I engaged the bit at the end put the bolt in the hole and then the post onto the bit that sticks out. When I tried to tighten them the bolt just pulled out instead of tightening. Did I miss a step somewhere?

I remember those things - stopped using them about 14 years ago when something better came along...I honestly thought they'd stopped making them!

Just throw them away and get some self tapping screws:

a hundred for 100mm ones - you'll find that you can use them for all kinds of things - they are practically all that is used these days for door and window frames, wallplates, posts etc etc

You need to 'set' the anchor by doing it up until it expands, remove the bolt, position the post, tighten up.

Better to use something like this

Yip some good alternatives but I had bought them and so they were going to be used :-) but for the future....

Medway....just to clarify...should I have inserted the full thing `set` the anchor and withdrawn the bolt part which would leave the anchor in the wall? Apologies if I am being a bit naive but I am not quite understanding this.
