Circular patio area on waterlogged ground

Hi all, I hope someone out there can help me....

The better half would like me to lay a circular patio area in the garden to the side of our new conservatory. The problem I have is that the grass (or mud) that is currently there gets very soggy when it rains, for some reason the water is very slow to drain away and with all the rain we have had recently its very muddy and the kids are bringing mud constantly into the conservatory and walking it throughout the house. What is the best way to prepare the ground so I can lay the patio area? I dont want to put it down only for there to be problems with it later.

Many thanks

Stephen

you know that the only answer is excavation of a pit soakaway and deep hardcore below the patio
