You would have thought so, wouldn't you? However, DeWalt (of all manufacturers) are still selling some small power tools with these batteries!

So one supposes these are the old type that I had no end of trouble with going down on their own are they? I'll not bother, even the Maplin ones seem pretty good these days.

no, its cheap. Sometimes bigger is pointless

Only until 31 December 2016. I think.
Probably because they skimp on containment and the things will leak sooner or later destroying whatever you put them in. These days only the low self discharge NiMH types are worth buying. Aldi/Lidl have them in stock from time to time as well as the ordinary ones.
I confess to using sacrificial Poundshop Kodak batteries in things that require high terminal voltage at near zero current. My desk phone is rather picky and won't work with any rechargeables (well it works but the LCD caller display is too faint to read).
Not any more it isn't. About 3000mAh is the top end AA NiMH now see Amazon (although how many charges that lasts for is open to question).
2850mAh is the top Ansmann offering although its charge retention isn't the greatest. I prefer less capacity and longer "shelf" life. These days I prefer slightly lower capacity low self discharge since rechargeable batteries need to be ready to use when you need them.
