Broken Downpipe

Morning all, I have a broken downpipe from my gutter and wondered if it is possible to replace only the top piece where the break is? The pipe is cast iron so I need to replace it before it falls on someone. Can I use plastic pipe and paint it or do I need to replace the whole pipe? Thanks WM

You *may* be able to just replace the broken bit if you can get it out and leave the collar on the section of pipe below in once piece so that you can refit new pipe into it. Having said that you may find that a pipe with one new section looks more out of place than just replacing the whole pipe.

John is absolutely correct, plastic above cast iron works just fine, the o.d. of the plastic is less than the i.d. of the cast iron collar so you need to squirt some mastic in there. The reverse - a c.i. pipe into a plastic lower pipe, then you need to buy an adapter. Mine, done by a previous owner, is painted and not really noticeable.
