BIOS corrupted by Virus?

Possibly the right cure, but definitely the wrong diagnosis.

Have managed to get the PC going again at least for the time being.

What seemed to impress it most was setting it so the MB was horizontal and then pressing down with a medium ammount of force on the heatsink on top of the processor.

Just to finish off the discussion for anyone who's interested, or might come googling after, it lasted a day then died ::=3D((

Fortunately a friend asked if anyone wanted a couple of Dell desktops he was moving on, so I spent last Saturday installing windows XP, Office and various other packages and am now up and running.

At the grand old age of enfranchisement one aught to consider moving out of the nest of Microsoft and getting a break from incessant bullying in one ofrm or another.

Go down to the local car boot and pick up a 10 or 20 GB hard drive second hand and fit it to your computer as a slave then load Granular or something like that on it.

No modern games in Linux but at 49 you might be a grown up.

Pulling the battery without pulling the power lead will not let the board drain. You should switch on after ompletely disconnecting it to remove residual juice.

The Dells IIRC all give three beeps if you remove a stick of RAM. So it is getting a reading from the BIOS for that. You can download a motherboard manual for most machines but I am not sure Dell do that.

Granular Linux works well in Dells. So I imagine the more well known ones do too. That particular OS is very user friendly, resembles Windows and only take s little hard drive. It's ideal for really old boxes and can give a P2 some sort of a life.

Always put the power lead back in when playing with the innards. But switch it off at the mains. Then any voltage gradient between you and it can safely diffuse to earth as you lean or rest an arm on the metalwork.

When your hair stands on end and your eyes light up and pop out of your head, you will find there is a fault with the wiring.

I'd like to know who phoned you and why you think it was a foreigner. Coul he have accessed your mains somehow. Not friendly neighbours or something?
