B&Q Closing stores

So you need to see screwdrivers, hammers, chisels, screws etc. in the flesh before you actually know if they'll do the job.

So do you make them take the screws out of the box as well ?

Which presumably means according to you - that basically anyone who buys anything mail-order is a mug.

Well good luck with that one !

So what size are the 3/4" pillar tap washers then?

Thats why I don't go there anymore or Homebase or the usual builder merchants!..

1/4" bigger than the 1/2" ones, of course.

Why not go mad and treat yourself and buy a packet of each ?

Pillar Tap Washer 1/2" 10 Pack ?0.66

- Pillar Tap Washer 3/4" 10 Pack ?0.66

Just think of all the fun you'll have and all the taps you'll be able to fix, for only ?1.32.

But you could have bought a £16 one from Wickes and returned it for £32 to B&Q with your original receipt.

It's because the "value" of a commercial property is calculated as a multiple of the commercial rent charged.

If it's empty, that will be the most recent rent, but letting a charity shop use it for free doesn't count so the value will remain the same

If market forces send rents temporarily downwards, agreeing a commercial rent at that rate will send the book value of the property spiralling downwards which, for listed companies will affect your stock listing and you can't have that can you. Oh so much better to leave it "empty", on the books at a high value, than rent if for something and have its book value halved

you obviously never go into Homebase

charity shops don't normally get their premises for nothing.

Went in once. After being studiously ignored by the surly, pimply teenagers masquerading as "staff" I took my business elsewhere.

It depends a lot on whether it's the shop looking for a long term premise, or the LL looking for a tenant because there's a slump in demand (and letting to a charity saves him from having to pay the rates bill)

I suspect it might be beneficial to the insurance policy to keep the unit "warm".

Nothing says "torch me" or "come and squat" like an empty shop.

What they really need is an online order and pay with a dedicated collection point. But not much point if you still have to wait while they make up the order.

Quite - which is odd, because round here there are more Homebase than B&Q within my catchment area. B&Q used to have about the same but closed two branches. In Wandsworth, there are two Homebase branches within easy walking distance of one another.

Why would you need 'staff' in a DIY store other than at the checkout?

one of them used to be a Texas Homecare.

Yes - but many many years ago. I'm just surprised both stores can be profitable.

Agreed, but they may not be able to get rid of the lease.
