when running water into the kitchen sink i have noticed a noise, like a low whine from the hot water faucet but not the cold water side, is this signaling problems with the hot water heater? tia

Try cleaning the aerator first. Just unscrew it and rinse it out backwards, be careful it dosen't come apart. If you have hard water soak it in vinegar for a few hours.
