Ingredients: Three 4"x4"x96" Douglas Fir Two 2"x4"x96" Douglas Fir Two 2"x6"x96" Douglas Fir One 48"x96"x3/4" Shop Maple Plywood 24 5/16"x4" carriage bolts 24 5/16" washers 24 5/16" hex nuts

Milling Directions: Joint and plane all lumber to uniform size (1.25x3.5, 1.25x5.0, 3.25x3.25) Cut each 4x4 into 39 1/4" lengths Cut each 2x4 and 2x6 into one 60" and one 24" length. Cut the ends at 45 degrees. Dado top 4 1/4" of each 4x4, 1.25" deep on two (opposite) sides for four of them, and on one side for the other two. Cut a 1.25" deep by 3.5" wide dado six inches up from the bottom of each 4x4 on two sides for the same four with the top dado on two sides, and on the face side for the other two 4x4. Cut a 1" wide by 3/4" deep rebate on one inside edge of each of the 2x4 and 2x6's. This will be the top edge.

Assembly: Lay three 4x4 (legs) flat with the double dado's on each end, dado facing out. Fit 60" 2x4 into bottom dado across all three legs with the rebate on the inside edge towards the top (the 5" dado). Fit 60" 2x6 into top dado across all three legs with the rebate on the edge towards the top (the 5" dado). Drill holes for 5/16" x 4" carriage bolts at each dado. Two holes for the front and rear 2x6, one hole centered for the front and rear 2x4.

Repeat for other three legs.

Stand both sets of legs on end with 5" dado on top. Fit 24" 2x4 and 2x6 in the remaining dado's on the sides. Drill for carriage bolts - carefully to avoid the carriage bolts for the front and rear.

Cut 24" x 60" sections from the shop maple plywood for the top and lower shelf which drop into the rebates on the 2x6 and 2x4.

Notch the lower shelf to fit around the center and corner legs.

Disassemble, spray with shellac and re-assemble.

The finished bench is 40" high. Adjust length length as required.

s/opposite/adjacent/

The 2x6 wraps around the outside of the top of the bench, the 2x4 wraps around the lower shelf of the bench. That means the two outer legs have the second dado on opposite sides.

I think you should have just bought a folding table. ...with or without using a credit card.
