For a secondary wood it sure seems that Oak is expensive. Why is this? A one foot by 1" by 10 foot board of red is about $35 at HD/Lwes.This sure doesn't seem like a "poor man's pine" to me.Why is a wood that considered to be so average so expensive? I don't understand...am I thinking of another type of wood?ThanksMAB

$35 for 10 board feet = $3.50 / board foot, which actually isn't too bad a price for S4S oak lumber. That said, there are many better places to buy hardwoods than HD or Lowe's. Try looking in the Yellow Pages under 'Lumber' for a dealer that specializes in hardwoods.It isn't. What gave you the idea that it was? Oak and pine are *nothing* alike. Not in physical properties, not in appearance, not in price. Perhaps you have a distorted picture of "expensive". Or a distorted picture of how much red oak lumber "should" cost. If you are serious about figured boars, I have all the CITES paperwork and can get nicely figured boards air freighted into the USA for less than $20 depending on size, or courier shipped if they are very big. I am pretty much out of the business but still have lots of friends that would love to sell the the yanks :-)

How about cocobolo, six feet long for $12/ bf +shipping :-)
