Again, not enough details.
Do you mean a ladder for a loft? Or a loft bed? They are two different things.
You can always DAGS.

Skipper, have you looked at tansu ladder cabinets? The are oriental in origin. The thing looks like a dresser until it is unfolded; it then becomes a stairway. Lots of drawers of various sizes. Maybe it's best to keep it unfolded; this piece of furniture can be very beautiful and a nice conversation piece. Expensive? Sure, but see what you are getting! Or you can have a contemporary version made to suit your needs.
The history behind hiding stairs within a piece of furniture is fascinating, but I will let you find out (got something to do with taxes). Just google or yahoo along!

To reiterate.
I am seeking inspiration for a loft ladder to gain access to my loft. The ceiling is 8 feet, I have enough room above to make it from one piece instead of those folding things. I don't want to be buying expensive hardware like hinges etc. Has anyone seen pictures of similar ideas.? I was thinking of maybe a counterbalance weight to reduce the effort of raising and lowering.
thanks skip
Hi Skip... Just wanted to ask for clarification.. are you looking to do something like a fire escape ladder that lifts/slides straight up when not in use? Kind of like an extention ladder?
