Worktop edging strip: fix before wallpapering?

I'm currently renovating the kitchen of a house I have moved into. I am putting stripping old wallpaper off, then putting new wallpaper up, also replacing the edging strip for the worktop.

Question: Which is the best option?

  • Fix new edging strip to bare plaster, then wallpaper, trying to get a flush finish with the top of the edging strip.

  • Wallpaper first, then fix on edging strip, glueing or fixing on top of wallpaper layer. Advantage -- easy to get a neat finish between edging strip and wallpaper. Disadvantage -- edging strip is not fixed to plaster/wall base.

Thanks Bruce

By edging strip I take it you mean some sort of trim along the back of the worktop?

What material are we talking of?

Yes. It stops splashes from the sink and also gives a tidier finish if there are gaps between the worktop and wall.

Just a plastic/vinyl sealing strip. Brown if I can find one that colour.

Ah yes, we have tiles so I just used a sealant bead.

I think I'd stick it on first - better chance of long lasting bond, and shouldn't be hard to get a good edge on the paper against that. and wall paper will likely want redoing before the worktop is replaced.

You're right, Chris. The wallpaper should go on last after I've done the painting, repairs and electrics.
