What's the word for connecting something live and causing the connection to make and break several times rapidly, possibly damaging the equipment?

Contact bounce. Switch bounce. Caused by elastic components bouncing like a rubber ball.

Except that that is too general. The intermittency while actively making or breaking a live connection is ...
Can't think of the right term, but Contact Bounce (as per burry) is probably the nearest !

But implies a contact, typically automatic like a relay, solenoid or a set of points?

Contact bounce normally refers to a switch or relay etc. Intermittent covers any fault with those symptoms.
