Why do circuit breakers go up for on and down for off?

I grew up in Philadelphia. I often could tell what part of the city you lived in the same way. When we moved to CT, people knew we were outsiders.

Amazing how many people in recent years never traveled more than a few miles from home.

Been about 20 years, but a neighbor wanted to get an appliance his wife asked about. Local store did not have it but I found a store 30 miles north of us in Worcester MA had it. I suggested he buy it there. His reply? "OK, I'll go but you'll have to drive"

It's accepted that shivering functions to warm a body up.

Maybe named for a rich grandfather.

Gilbert isn't too bad. Nickname Gil.

I can beat that. Lionel Dimel.

And the semi-famous Amory Lovins. I pal'd around with him at a national science fair in Baltimore.

Much worse in Italy, it isnt just accents there, its entire dialects which are completely unintelligible to other Italians.

Are there sharks? Can't think of much else that could kill a scuba diver.

I may have been on parts of it at Lassen or Kings. The only part I'm sure of was about 100 yards at Donner Pass. It might have been spring in most of CA but it was still winter there.

I've done parts of the AT, the Long Trail in VT, and the Continental Divide trail but never with the intention of through hiking.

In very limited circumstances. With the current trend toward catch and release policies it takes several tries to get a death sentence.

Deaths by black bear are extremely rare. The ones I've encountered either run in the opposite direction, tree, or go on doing whatever they were doing while ignoring me.

The cats are spookier. Most of the problems are when something fits their food profile, like a child running away or a jogger/mountain biker passing them. Stand your ground and they seem to feel they're in the presence of another alpha predator that isn't worth messing with. They will walk away but they're not running away like a bear.

You still lock up a third of your population. Steal a chocolate bar three times and you're jailed I believe. Or is that only the blicks?

Odd, I always thought the best idea was to accept they're superior and walk away.

350/100,000. Were you always good at maths? When 13% of the population commits 54% of the homicides they do tend to be over-represented.

Cats are better at some things like bringing down a deer bare-pawed. I'm better at some things like putting 8 250 grain projectiles in a cat sized target. We call it a draw.

Yes, we all know you're capable of super-human feats. I'm reminded of a Dripkick Murphys song:

Make sure you listen to the end.

"Wir können alles. Außer Hochdeutsch."

Baden-Württemberg is a high-tech area and came up with the ad campaign. "We can do anything. Except speak standard German".

When I was in the Boston area I met quite a few well educated professionals who thought the world ended at 128.

NYS helped to show people new horizons. Upstate was going downhill so fast anyone with git up and go got up and went. I left when I was 22 and never looked back.

You may think you're superhuman but you wouldn't last long in 45F water.

Might have been an anomaly but I remember one guy in NO that sounded like he was from Brooklyn.

Nothing like as bad as Italian.

I wonder why Americans (it seems to me anyway) pronounce the H in the the name Herb, but not in the foodstuffs?

My sons went to school with a child named Finbar, which wouldn't have been too bad, except that his surname is Furey. Finbar Furey is a very well known name in Irish music circles.

Accents are weird.

Until he died a few years ago, my mother's uncle by marriage had a VERY pronounced American drawl (I forget where he was from), but he'd lived in the UK (Manchester) since WW2, only going back to the US once for a 2 week visit!

Over 60 years after he came here, he was known to say "Weeell I gueeess Iyyy lost ma accsent nowww," while having a stronger accent than most Americans just arriving in the UK.

My cousins' Manchester accents disappeared totally when living in Germany, but would return within weeks of coming back to the UK to visit.

A teacher I met had an almost impenetrable Scots accent, but our neighbours in France told us that he spoke French with no accent at all.
