For some years after 1066, English aristocrats spoke French, so we have quite a few leftovers still in use.
There are a number of cases of US people using older forms of English that British English evolved away from. We still say 'forgotten' as the perfect tense, but no longer use 'gotten', which Americans retain.
Just refer to herbs as Kraut; it's easier.
Traveling light, were you? Come to think of it, I was driving a Sprite when I left for greener pastures. The people at my new place of employment gave me a hard time. 'What are you going to do in the winter?' My answer was a Lincoln Continental. When I moved to yet another pasture the Lincoln towed the Sprite nicely. I doubt the Lincoln even noticed the passenger.
It's disconcerting when Kelly Ryan from Yellowstone or Charlie Hunnam from Sons of Anarchy switch back to their native accent for interviews. Brit actors must work cheap; there are a lot of them playing US characters lately.
I think my ex is on that plan. Between limited mobility, covid, and crime in NYC she doesn't get out much.
The Beatles did a lot of songs in American.
As I drove cross country, it started pulling harder and harder to the right. Some cheap stamped part of the suspension was tearing. I might not have emerged from the Grand Canyon. The shop in Fremont CA was amazed that I was alive. They couldn't get a new part so they hammered and welded the torn one.
Kissinger got the same result, tho he was older than that when they migrated.
Yes.
Nope, there were always tribes, even with the higher apes and monkey and almost all other animal species.
That utterly mangles the real story.
You sure you don't with the word honour ?
She offered her honour He honoured her offer...
It's tough to run a village or a factory or an army (or a family) if people can't understand each other.
Tribes separate and compete and fight based on just accents too.
In the case of the Crimea in a perfect world it would be given back to the Tatars.
Sevastapol certainly is a factor. While the Black Sea isn't a great place for a fleet given the difficulty of getting to the open sea for all its land mass Russia has limited options. Neither Murmansk or Vladivostok are the greatest ports.
Exceptions prove the rule and all that. Honor and honest, but definitely not honey. Unfortunately honor isn't a word that is very applicable in the US.
Or have some honest elections and let the residents decide. Honest elections in Ukraine _and_ Russia.
As if.
Nope. Factorys work fine with lots of immigrants with minimal english.
Armys in spades back when mercenarys were the main source of troops.
Even in WW2, the Italian army worked fine even when so many Italians couldnt understand other Italians. The problem with the Italian Army wasnt the language, it was that they were gutless.
Same with the Germans with so many Hungarians, Romanians etc involved with them.
BULLSHIT.
The english civil was was never about accents.
Nope, just like england won't be given back to the celts, angles, saxons, jutes, etc etc etc either.
Never bought that mindlessly silly line.
