Or just pick up a s/h business class router that does VPN termination - then you can just "phone home" with your VPN when away from home, and access directly when there.

(you can then also do things like stick any IoT stuff of dubious design on its own VLAN, so it can't snoop on the rest of your network)

But that needs extra work if you're on a dynamic IP, as most are, and fails completely if you're on CGNAT.

Plus if you use your own router you lose 'digital voice' phone service from most ISPs nowadays.

Most Internet routers have four LAN ports. It's now common for one or more, maybe all four, to be able to be designated as VLANs (Virtual).

This means they can all have Internet access (or have ports forwarded to them from outside) but not communicate with each other. Anything a bit suspect can be put on one of these VLANs and therefore talk to the Net, as it generally must, but not get at the data on your workstation(s) or server(s).

Most networked cameras, smart TVs etc are Chinese, so nobody has a clue what they might be doing in addition to their official tasks. It can be assumed that anything voice-operated is listening all the time, for example. They might well be programmed to rummage around on their networks and report anything interesting they find.

Not much... most recent ish draytek boxes will handle dynamic DNS as well if you want.

So avoid choosing a crap ISP then :-)

Again you can get routers with VoIP capability and the ability to access multiple SIP accounts. You don't need to use your ISPs favoured VoIP offering.

You check every web access? http is normally permitted out of all firewalls, so it's often used for purposes other than web access. Microsoft was using it for email and VPN more than twenty years ago to my knowledge.

My router (from Plusnet) has logging, but not syslogging, so I have to actually login to the router to read it, and I don't bother doing that often unless I'm already suspicious. I do have an additional firewall filtering and logging outgoing from the network, and there's quite a lot of stuff being denied without any appliances complaining or malfunctioning.

It only needs a new frame and it'll be a bit like Trigger's broom!
