True but rippers aren't very thick, 1/16" at the most and that can get quite tight up near the nails.
I have since found wind tunnel data for a slate roof as well. That suggests there is nothing to choose between them - both tiles and slates, in good condition, are capable of withstanding 125mph winds. Of course, not many older roofs are in good condition. Until I had it replaced, my tile roof would shed the occasional tile with very little provocation, but it was over 90 years old.
