What this please?

This is a "switch" in the hallway of our new house. There is a cover which can be pulled down to expose some additional controls. Can someone give an indication of this all does?

the small control to early to make it come on when it is lighter, and late to make it come on when it gets a bit darker) then turn off after the other setting amount of time.

But that's just my guess!

Fred This switching unit looks like it might be a time and light sensor control for security lights. My guess would be that by turning the dial to early then the light will go on when it is still quite light, and then will go off after a time (in hours) as set by the other dial. If you have an outside light then try this with the switch in the on position. If it works then wait till dusk and start off with the dial at late and switch in on position. Rotate the dial towards early until the light comes on. This will be where you want it set to. Then just set the time to the desired setting.

It might be that you only wish to use it if you are going out and know it will be dark when you come back. In that case set the time to maximum and just manualy switch light off when you come back at night.

Hope this helps. Calum Sabey (Newark Traditional Kitchens 01556 690544)

really ought to get the hang of using Google you know. "switch + early + late" = result :)

The message from " snipped-for-privacy@gglz.com" contains these words:

Nah, that wouldn't do. They'd all arrive at once. You'd need a second adjuster marked "Scatter" so they'd spread arrivals over perhaps twenty minutes. Perhaps some means of controlling the number of bottles of dodgy wine brought with them would be good, too.

ordinary switch. The Early / Late setting allows you decide how dark it is before the light comes on. The central dial sets (roughly) how many hours it stays on after that. You can use it either to have a welcoming light on when you come home late or, what it is sold for, to make the house appear occupied when it is empty. However, for the latter, it is better to have more than one, with different settings. You should avoid using low energy lamps on the circuit controlled by the switch. Its timing may also gets upset if the sensor (the small dark bit above one of the screws - I think the left one) is exposed to a light source, other than the light it controls, during the hours of darkness.

Not that Google! The archive for uk.d-i-y. The very first hit from 15th August would have answered your question.

Yes hindsight is an exact science and I could have done more for myself. Google found, in its first few hits, an archived version of uk.d-i-y and the article you mentioned.

I had never seen anything like it before and wasn't sure where to start.

Many thanks for the help given here.
