what's the absolute simplest, most foolproof way to may shelves?

Hubby wants some simple storage in the roofspace. He was talking about buying??!!*!? one of those wooden and canvas jobs from argos. Surely it would be cheap and simple to knock up a set of shelves?

It needs to be about 18" deep and about 5 or 6 foot long, with 3 shelves 18" apart?

He has a straight eye and will be able to get it level, but if it involves for than 2 hours work, he'll not do it.

Any suggestions?

You need to watch the weight. Roofspace isn't normally designed for storage of any weight, so you'll need to be very careful how you support any shelves.

Free standing, or fixed to a wall?

For fixed to a wall, try the adjustable shelving tracks with brackets from Screwfix - good quality, but way cheaper than the usual sources.

Free standing ones made out of plastic sections like this:

also very quick and easy to assemble (about 10 mins a set), strong, and won't rust.

We've got about 500 tons of junk in ours :-) It's been there for 30 years. They don't build 'em like they used to :-) clue: Most of any real weight is sitting on rafters directly above internal walls.

Depends where it's going to go and what it's going to hold. A sheet of MDF gives you three shelves about 16" deep and 8' long - you could hang them from the underside of the ridge with a few big screw eyes and string everything together with some polypropylene rope. I have many other creative ideas ...

MDF and chipboard both no good for shelves unless also battened as they sag slowly under load. If you wat something quick and easy just go to IKEA which is ridiculously cheap

No IKEA in Ireland, worse luck. Ferry charges make it not so ridiculously cheap.

IME it's not a problem with MDF with adequately spaced support, although battens will also work - if chunkiness isn't a problem then

6mm MDF glued to both sides of a 2x1 frame makes great cheap rigid shelving.
