for an alcove type shower enclosure, ie, stud walls on 3 side ?
or is there another route I should be taking ?

I would use WBP ply or Aquapanel.

Aquapannel which is expensive, or fermacell, which is less expensive.

Aquapanel or Wedi board. Wedi is light weight, comes in a variety of thicknesses, and the styrofoam core insulates the tiles so they don't feel so cold. Aquapanel is heavier than plasterboard. Both need to be screwed and taped to be fully water resistant.
