My "proper old" Hotpoint had a mechanical interlock that let you open the door the moment the drum came to rest, the new "Indesit/Ariston/Hotpoint" makes you wait ages with a thermal interlock.

That would explain them not being instant, but why on earth make them so it takes a full three minutes? Thirty seconds would be more than good enough, with plenty of leeway and you could design such an interlock for roughly any time you wanted.
