Latex overlap adhesive, or Copydex. Slightly dampen the back surface of the paper before applying it, and remove any surplus with a tissue after pressing the paper down.

Finger, or metal?

Yep, I'd go with the Copydex or something similar.....my decorator recently used the same trick & it worked a treat.

I once used a border adhesive - when I came to remove the paper and then to paint the walls it was a devil of a job to remove - I had to sand it off.

Round, oval, felt, masonry (they should be ok as they tend to not fall out), plasterboard etc :-)
