Very OT, memory card

I'm asking on behalf of an elderly gent. I know nothing about these things New SanDisk 32GB SDHC memory card used in dash cam. VLC won't play dash cam footage and reports "AVI index is broken" The card was returned as being faulty. The new replacement card kicks up the same result. The dash cam has been returned as faulty and a replacement is being sent. Question is: Is the card permanently damaged? He does not want to try the dodgy looking repairs. Google is not my friend here. He knows how to format it.

Cheers Chris, I've looked. Can't see any answers about the card being permanently damaged. The repairs look temporary and dodgy to me. I just don't trust these sites.

He tells me that he is using VLC and that it plays everything else apart from his dash cam footage.

I am not him. The VLC fix is a temporary fix and is not what he was looking for. He is asking me if the card is permanently damaged Thanks for your reply.

If he hasn't *got* any other devices, how does he look at the camera output?

If he plugs it into a computer with a USB lead, you can get USB "sticks" that accept a card, thus by-passing the camera.

And Royal Mail still did quite a good service, last time I looked.

He tells me that he has a card reader into which he shoves his memory card. Then he tells me that all the videos are there but he gets the "AVI file indexing is broken" message and can't see the videos. All he is asking me is the card permanently damaged. I know little about this sort of thing.

Has he tried right clicking on a file, selecting "Open With" and then trying all the options?

He could try installing VLC, which IME is fairly robust. This is a very reputable "open source" bit of software IIRC associated with one one of the Paris universities. I guess the development is in part done as student projects, but the stuff released is normally very good.

I would think it is unlikely that the card is permanently damaged, unless perhaps it is a "fake" card as sometimes available from eBay with only a small fraction of the "plate" value.

But the dash-cam plays the footage doesn't it? If so it's probably not corrupt media. Doubly so as it has been replaced.

Thst not impossible. AVI is not a single standard Try handbrake to convert iot.
