Used 8HP Briggs & Stratton

Just got this motor. It idles only, can't get it to sustain an increase of RPM/throttle. I think there must be some springs and linkage missing therefore not keeping it in time or something. Trying to find a picture or diagram to check. Model 194702 TYpe 4015 01 Code 970213YE

Blocked main jet?

strip and clean the carb, or simply get a new one.

Haven;t really looked at mine a lot, but IIRC there is simply a centrifugal governor that closes the throttle when it over revs..

Take off the air filter and see what's what. They are simple beasts.

As TNP says there is an L shaped pressed steel lever centre pivoted on a governor pin near the sump (bottom of engine) This has a spring on the shorter arm to the engine and a wire linkage to the carb' on the longer arm with a fine spring over the linkage .This linkage should hold the throttle fully open and close it as the engine revs. Normally the bolt securing the arm works loose and the governor shaft turns without moving the linkage. Remove the air filter and see if the butterfly valve is open in the carb' if not adjust the linkage the shaft should have a slot in it for a screwdriver.
