The Microsoft one is very basic.
It's like the seat cushion in an airplane, the seat cushion that floats.
It is intended for replacing a failed hard drive. That's why it has the "AllCritical" option.
The commercial one I use, their Free version, it has a few more tricks up its sleeve, which is why I like it.
Some of Microsoft projects, we don't understand what happens to them from a staffing perspective. They created Federated Search, maybe around Vista era. One of the options is broken (the option should be removed from the GUI if they have no intention of finishing the feature). And the software has a suggested limit for size (no more than 1 million files for search indexing). But there's no sign that any staff are working on that any more. Most of the Windows users, seem to look through the third-party stuff, knowing that a few of the third party ones aren't technically sophisticated (slow). But on the other hand, they get the job done.
For one Microsoft utility, it's around 24 years old now, and that is nfi.exe . It could use a rewrite, you know, it's been 24 years :-) As well, even Notepad was functionally broken for around 15 years, when out of the blue they started working on it again. The Win10 one is the pinnacle of the effort, making an App out of it for Windows 11 ruined it, because the App project chose to fork code from earlier and did not use the win10 code as the base! Yikes!
