Up and over hinges

I'm struggling to imagine how you would tend to the BBQ with the door(s) opened upwards being in your face?

The lintel is at just above head height so the doors would then form a sort of roof.

Thinking further, above the lintel is some more block work so another line of thinking is the doors hinged at the top and then some sort of rope/ pulley type thing to pull it up - not the best aesthetically but maybe something in that direction would work. Also I guess a less elegant option is to have some sort of frame and manually move the doors onto it. Although that seems a faff

I presume you've anticipated that the doors would get very hot (and any paint on them may burn) if the doors are suspended maybe 30-40 cm *above* the grill area that gets hot (as "a sort of roof"), instead of them being in the normal position where they are folded right back so they extend below the back of the grill.

The doors when open will be about 1m above the cooking surface and also not directly above the coals as they will be hinged on the outside face of the brick chimney.

I have had some further thoughts

1. I was worried about whether the doors would survive being hinged from the top. So thought that using strap hinges would solve this.
2. Rather than up and over I could mount the hinges higher up the chimney face and then have a way of covering this so it would be seen.

This gives me 2 new problems

1. With the hinges in the new position, the door will open at the correct height but there will now be a gap between the door when it is opened and the chimney - the door will need to be fitted lower down the hinge than normal because the hinge is mounted higher up if you see what I mean. Problem is that this is obviously exactly where I will be standing to cook so will get wet!
2. I need a way of holding the doors up. On the outside edge I could fit say a hydraulic arm or something to the BBQ side wall but in the centre where the doors meet I don't have that luxury unless I put a vertical strut there which will get in the way.

A photo would help. Rather than fixing hinges to the blockwork/brickwork fasten a timber cross-piece and secure strap hinges to it and the door/s As for keeping them up you could go for a rope secured to the door and tied to a cleat on the chimney or props attached behind the doors at the corners that could be hinged and swung down.
