Underwater hose clips

As part of my pond works, there is a need for some hose clips, in a location that really is one I wish never to have to revisit. They will be permanently underwater, but not exposed to sunlight.



I would generally use Terry clips, but these might eventually rust. I do have some nylon Herbie clips, but plastics can also degrade.

BES sell stainless steel hose clips.

So do loads of other people. :-) Screwfix for example.

Stainless steel Jubilee clips. Genuine Jubilee clips are 316 stainless steel, which is marine grade. I have used them on outside products I sell for many years.

Stuff that is exposed to water, but not oxygen, will nit rust

Zip ties.

This will be in running water, I suppose, which means there's likely to be plenty of dissolved oxygen in it.

Does anyone know about the different grades of stainless steel? The BES ones are "Grade 430 stainless steel". Is that good/bad?

However, they also say "Plated steel worm", which may be bad.

300 series - Austenitic stainless steels, non-magnetic. Most cannot be hardened by heat treatment.

The most common are:

301 malleable, usually used for decorative purposes. 304 the most common stainless steel, but not salt-water resistant 316 The second most common grade made. Marine / medical grade steel, offering excellent corrosion resistance

400 series - Martensitic stainless steels, magnetic, Some can be hardened by heat treatment.

The most common are:

430 Forms easily but does not resist extreme temperatures or corrosion well. 434 Very corrosion and oxidation resistant, cannot be heat hardened. Widely used for car trim. 420 Highly corrosion resistant and takes an edge well. Used for scalpel blades.

In my youth I frequented an open air electronic scrap yard featuring plated steel chassis - cadmium or zinc passivated, there was never any rust except where it got scratched.

Standard hose clips are used throughout the US rust belt where winter salt destroys cars in under ten years. Many cars also have rusted hose clips, but they still work.

I mean how long do you expect the hoses to last? It takes a long time to rust through a mm of hose clip.

I would agree corrosion would be slow if the item is permanently submerged, but given the few pennies different why not go for the correct grade of stainless. I know I would for the confidence it brings.

I would prefer to use P-clips if they exist on the OP's size of hose.

430 will be fine for a pond.

I would always use 316 for a fit and forget job. It isn't that much more expensive.

That is the conclusion I came to from my research, and they are on their way.

But wouldn't you expect the BES martensitic ones to be just about indistinguishable from 316 in cold water? It's not as if they need to be "decorative". Their high temperature corrosion properties might not be as good.

Is it worth taking the risk for the small price difference?

Dissolved oxygen is good for stainless steel as it keeps the passivation layer healthy. Very low oxygen levels can cause stainless steel to corrode faster due to failure of the passivation.

As the owners of boats with stainless steel bolts holding the keels on found several decades ago (1970s?).

How? Corrosion on steel implies iron oxide. i.e. oxygen

Unless you have electrochemical action ongoing to electrolyse water, to produce it...

Are you telling me that there is no oxygen in the sea then?
