uk-d-i-y Suggestion

This is a very successful group with loads of good advice. However, because it is so popular, a thread is 'dead and buried' far down the list within a couple of days very often leaving questions unanswered.

Not sure how it is done, but may I suggest splitting this group into some new groups: uk.d-i-y.building uk.d-i-y.electrical uk.d-i-y.plumbing uk.d-i-y.carpentry uk.d-i-y.misc (uk.d-i-y.tools+appliances)

NO.

It's very easy to scroll down the screen.

Many diy projects involve more than one discipline.

The interaction of people with various expertises could be lost.

What would happen to IMM?

I don't really think that would work - the whole success of the group is due to that fact that there are people here who both specialise in a particular area but also have an interest/some knowledge in some other areas. This means that people who may be experts in the electrical field might have plenty of good plumbing advice and might also dabble in a litte plastering and have an outspoken opinion about tools. If such a person were to only subscribe to the eletrical group then their valuable contributions in other areas would be sadly missed.

This comes up every six months and is always buried, for good reason.

Presumably he would head up the hacksaw division

Either learn your existing newsreader better, or get a better on, so you can watch threads you're interested in and ignore ones your not.

I wouldn't support that ...

1) too much separation, many people would subscribe to most for them anyway. 2) you effectively can't remove a newsgroup, so the original would be left and used by many 3) luckily we don't get much spam here, but with multiple groups we'd get each one multiple times

4) Add that the current "top level" uk domain wouldn't be allowed and everything would have to move to uk.rec.d-i-y. 5) It would break the archives, although Google seem to be managing that on their own. 6) It would diminish any "community" spirit.

7) There really aren't that many threads. Only about 10 or 20 or so a day. Not difficult to keep up with. No-one really looks at threads more than a couple of days old unless specifically interested in it, in which case the threads are marked. If your newsreader doesn't support marking threads as watched, then ditch it.

Why is it that whenever this is suggested (several times a year), it's always by someone who never (or hardly ever) posts to the group?

(not being rude - it's a genuine question!)

Because it would make *their* lives easier when searching Google just restrict the search to uk.d-i-y.tools.saws.hackwsaws.blades.laminates

Probably because those who use the group don't find it a problem, and those who find it a problem don't use the group.

Reminds me of a problem we had in an orchestra I used to play in, that of falling numbers of members. We wondered if chosing a different rehersal day than Friday might help. Someone did a survey, and discovered the only day everyone could manage was a Friday. A truely remarkable discovery I thought ;-)

Sorry, I didn't realise this has been suggested before.

I don't post often but read this group with great interest as we have major improvements in the pipeline and would like to do some of the work ourselves. I have learnt a lot from this group and do mark threads I am interested in but they often die before they seem finished.

Just forget I ever mentioned it!

Use a good newsreader like "agent" and set it up to watch or ingore particular threads and posters.

I've never seen a *thread*, such as is displayed and indexed by any competent newsreader (Mozilla Thunderbird, Forte Free Agent or Agent, tin, trn, ...) get "buried". Maybe you should try a real newsreader.

uk.d-i-y works. Its volume is well below that of other also-unsplit, also-successful groups. d-i-y is necessarily "multi-trade", and splitting it up is a waste of time, and a disservice to all - regular contributors, lurkers, and newbies alike.

Well, I'd be interested in a 'Make your own Dalek' thread.

Like the number of consevation/birdy/nature study groups which operate on Sunday mornings, and are then filled with incoming churchgoers trying to veto Sunday morning.

If you make a folder for diy (or future projects or whatever you choose to call it) and move the threads you want to it they'll be there for as long as you choose.

It's perfectly OK - we're quite friendly really; and happy to try to help on anything that you bring.

Results are variable, though. Sometimes something quite trivial sparks hundreds of responses over a few days; occasionally posts don't get a reply because nobody knows.

Overall, I'd say we get a fairly good and useful hit rate.

unanswered.

And even if it was done, uk.d-i-y could not cease to exist so most people would still post here.
