Yep. A 21" 1920x1080 would be about the same PPI, while a 24" would have a lower PPI so the pixels would be bigger. As to whether bigger or more pixels are preferable, is left as an exercise for the reader.

My point as solely that there is a set increase in priice after 1920x1080

I have the 2 way version of that, with ausio and USB as well as KVM. Nicely configurable too, so I canswitch KVM without switching the other two if I want, without any faffing.

I also have an 8 way one for the server rack. My wife has a 2 way one (no audio switching) and I have a 4 way one in the workshop.

I use RDP if I want to watch the outside cameras (typically for a delivery). I use one screen on the FreeBSD system (where I spend most of my time) and the other via RDP to the camera software.

I haven't noticed any performance problems.

It is actually W7 pro.

A modern monitor will also use less power than something made 15+ years ago. Unless you are into heavy duty gaming or graphics, you will benefit from that saving. The 24 inch IPS Hazro monitor that I bought in 2008 for about £480 was handy to keep my hands warm in winter !.

Remember, your laptop probably has two graphics capabilities, the one driving the internal screen and the one deriving an external monitor. It was quite common for HP corporate laptops on sale 15 to 20 years ago produced much worse graphics using an external monitor for this reason. Since the output was typically text or presentation stuff, such differences didn't really matter.

My HP laptop of about that era produces 1920 x 1080 internal and/or on an HDMI connected HD TV.

I have never come cross one whose external outpput wqs lower resolution that internal, indeed it would require extra circuitry to make it so.

Yup, with gigabit lan, real time video does not seem to be a problem.

(although I am not sure how much impact the processor performance on the sending end can influence that).

I normally buy (decent spec) 24" 1920x1080 monitors for £80 to £90 ish - most users are content with those in terms of image scaling. Smaller than that, and they need to scale fonts bigger and lose the extra screen "space" the resolution can offer.

Personally I prefer a bit more vertical resolution than that... 1200 pixel high screens are now quite pricey (£200+) but 1440 high ones are cheaper!

(you could just use a pair of HD screens in portrait mode).

To get the best from 2560 x 1440 you need 27" or bigger IMHO.

I remember doing a similar sum when deciding to offload my 21" CRT CAD/CAM style monitor (which cost over 1k when new!). The cost of the

1920 x 1200 TFT that replaced it was probably saved in electricity in a year or so.

You can also get what are in effect USB display adaptors that add a new video output to anything that can do USB2 or better. Some of the flight sim enthusiasts use them to add a dozen or more screens for fully immersive out of the cockpit visuals!

I bet it'd drive a 640x480 monitor if you hooked one up ...

I'd have thought most TVs are 4K (and have been for a few years?) so that ought to be the sweet spot by now

You jump from sub £100 for HD to over £150 for a "quad HD" (2560x1440) or well over £250 for 4K UHDTV (3840 x 2160)

Whether that is a sweet spot for you, is a personal choice.

I have always disliked 'bleeding edge' tech. Expensive, hasn't amortized its development costs yet, nor yet had time to iron out all the bugs

Full HD has been around long enough to be dirt cheap, reliable , drivable by almost every onboard graphics adapter, at low power and decent frame rates, , and more than good enough for me.

I wouldn't for example consider in buying anything *less* than full HD these days. (unless it was for a Raspberry PI 'project')

Even on a laptop internal screen.

There are still 'HD Ready' i.e. 1366 x 768 TVs on sale.

TVs are often a lot bigger - 40-55". A 40" 4K TV is the same PPI as four

20" 1080p displays, so it can be a good option if you just want more real estate rather than sharper definition. But you do need to have the space for it.

eg Currys have 419 4K TVs but only two smaller than 39" (both of which are

32").

You can get 4K monitors in smaller sizes, but those panels are made specifically for monitors and command higher prices.
