Removing and refitting SWA cable

I have an old shed which is leaning a little and might need replacing. It's powered via 2.5mm^2 (I think) SWA cable run from the garage to a CU in one corner of the shed. There's another 2.5mm^2 SWA cable running from the shed to the greenhouse. Both go through adjacent holes in floor. Demolishing the old shed would temporarily leave the CU "floating" a metre in the air, held by the SWA cables. I assume that if I had a new shed erected the SWA cables would go through holes in the floor similar to the current arrangement, but of course they'd have to be disconnected from the CU first and then reconnected.

I've done my own - very similar to your work. It's not a very flexible material to work with.

I'd suggest a temporary fence post to hold the CU up. I think I'd remove a floor board from the new shed and fit it back in two (or more) pieces once you've got the SWA through the larger hole.

No problem the job is straightforward. Isolate the supply first then open the CU. You will see the SWA cable inside it will be secured to the case with a nut which may have an earth wire secured by a screw or alternatively a “banjo” washer with the earth wire secured to it. Disconnect all the wires noting where they went for the purpose of re-assembly. Undo the aforementioned nut and pull the cable out of the unit, do not undo any other parts of the SWA gland.

While it is easy enough to do, you may not need to. How is the new shed supplied? Mine came basically flat-pack (self-assemble, but on-site supplier assembly was an option), so the floor was put down before the sides were erected - which would allow the floor to be slotted, to slide around the cables.

Remember that 'old' copper goes hard, so if you go down the disconnection/reconnection route, it might be a struggle if space is tight, and if it is XPLE insulated, then you must not bend the inner cables if the temperature is below 5C (ish??)

It's almost 12 years old; I've no idea what make of SWA cable was used. If I have a new shed, I'll try to bring the cables up through the floor without removing them from the CU or changing the layout.
