Many thanks to those who responded re the flexible piping.
In the end I decided to replace the whole lot. I bought a "McAlpine Double & 1½ Bowl Sink Kit 40mm White." and I was very impressed by it. Very well made, good washer seals, very easy to adjust to size and easy to fit. Definitely recommend it.
