I have lost touch with some very long term friends, who are in or approaching their 80s. I need to go back about 5 years, I have not got their current addresses, only old ones and their names. Is there a reasonably easy way to find if they are still alive? TIA
Totally OT; how to find if someone is deceased

Input as much info as you can, this will search the electoral role:

Barry
Facebook their son or daughter and ask them!
You could try 'Friends Reunited',

although I've never used them myself, so that's not a recommendation.
Alternatively, try one of the free family history search sites such as

(Free Births, Marriages and Deaths), although IIRC their records only cover pre-1983 BMD's. Then there's the Mormon site,

and click on the Search icon in the middle below the picture.
The problem with family history searches is that unless you have additional information, like date of birth, wife's name etc. you end up with an awful lot of hits and it's often impossible to pinpoint the one you want.
Or if you have addresses that are no more than five years old, just write. If you're lucky, they'll still be there, and if they've moved on, in whatever way that means, the new occupant may either forward your letter, or tell you their fate.

is a good source of births, marriages and deaths.
formatting link
says the cutoff date at present is 2007.
