TOT Dog Food

By coincidence, I read an article about how the cash strapped are now eating dog food and then slightly later was looking at the ingredients on a tin of cheap dog food (approx 50p for a 400g can)

Beef in Jelly

44% meat and meat derivatives
4% beef

Chicken in Jelly

44% meat and meat derivatives
4% chicken

Analytical content Protein 7.5% Fat 5.5% Moisture 81%

Could this dog food be classed as a low fat diet?

There was a fly-on-the-wall series about pet food companies and the (human) staff actually did taste testing on new varieties before mass production.

I think the days when pet food was made from condemned meat (that had been stained with a blue dye to stop it entering the human food chain) are history.

Nothing new about that. One of our abo kids got a big can of dog food for his school lunch, which he got to eat cold.

Yep.

The dry dog food would be even better. Lots of veg in it tho, produces massive dog turds. Likely wouldn't with 'humans'. Thats what I fed my massive alsatian. Much cheaper than the cheapest canned dog food.

But rice and noodles are even cheaper than canned dog food.

We gave in the last year had dogs killed by the meat used in the dog food. Not clear what happens if humans eat that dog food.

I think that its actually a lot of junk, and of course the vitamins and other additives are meant for dogs not humans. Brian

AIUI the prime downside of petfoods is they're sometimes far from fresh, and humans don't deal with that as well. Animals are less fussy on that point.

Dogs aren't usually fussy but some cats definitely are (fussy that is). Fresh dead mouse or fresh cat food from a tin are OK for ours but after a few hours the tinned cat food is rejected. (The dog is quite happy to finish it off though)

That's not because the meat is old, it's because it's lost its strong scent. Turn the food over to expose fresh wet underside and the cat eats again. It can also happen cos puss ate all the gravy/jelly and the meat is poor quality.
