Toilet Cistern

Hi Not sure if this is a problem but, for some time i have noticed a decrease in water flow from the cistern into the toilet, this resulting on occasions in 'items' not flushing away. Would it be a case of replacing the contents of the cistern i.e siphon unit etc? Or what? Cheers

Is there actually less flow, or is it a bit more subtle than that?

First make sure that there is no scale in the bowl, and particularly under the rim. Scale can affect the incoming velocity of the water and cause inadequate scavenging.

Check that the ball valve isn't out of adjustment so as to be cutting off before the cistern is full. Try adjusting it to fill to within about half an inch of the overflow.

If the ball valve arm is plastic, there should be a plastic screw to twiddle to adjust it. If it's metal, you need to bend the arm slightly to raise the height of the ball at which it cuts off.

Try pouring a kettle full of boiling water in to the cistern to clear out anything which is stuck in the bowl rim channel. The rim of the toilet bowl is a hollow channel that lets the water flush around inside and come out through holes on the under side. If the channel is getting things building up inside it, then can cause the water to not flow completely around the channel, and so not clean the bowl properly.

Remember to flush and empty the cistern before pouring the kettle in to it. Hold up the float ball arm to stop the water coming in, then flush the loo as normal to take most of the water out. Then pour in the boiling water on top of what's left in the bottom of the cistern.
