Timber buildings insurance

Nov 10, 2004 7 Replies

We're (still) in the process of buying a barn conversion (original building about 200 years old, Grade II listed), and need buildings insurance. The owner's previous partner said he had a good deal from a company specialising in agricultural-type property. Unfortunately I can no longer contact him to find out who it is, and the owner is abroad.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a suitable insurer? Many companies aren't interested if your house isn't made of brick or concrete.

if you Google on "listed building" insurance, you'll find various firms that claim to specialise in this. Also ISTR that there is an association for owners of listed buildings that would presumably have some good advice on this topic but I couldn't find them quickly.

NFU Mutual done me a decent deal. They are very good on 'rural' poperties.

I think. They have deals with friendly insurers.

I can also vouch for the NFU. They also do car insurance.

Thanks to all for the suggestions. I'll call the NFU Mutual office in the morning.

Yes I think so. I also got prices from a few other companies that 'specialise in listed buildings' but they all came out way higher than NFU's price. And NFU have a deal where they send a surveyor out to decide what the rebuild cost is (which is important with a non standard house). If I stay with NFU for five years then the survey is free
