thought the 2 international Aldi setups were run by two feuding German brothers who split up (over pro/anti argument re tobacco sales at check-outs), formed Aldi Nord und Aldi Sud, but by a good arrangement do not tread on one another's toes when empire-building. Jim

and Lidl do not have family connections.

Both Aldi and Lidl are privately held, but published information gives a snapshot of their operations. Aldi is divided into two cooperating entities that cover the north and south half of Germany respectively. The company is owned by the brothers Theo and Karl Albrect and commands sales of about $35 billion annually from operations of about 7,000 stores worldwide, including 2,400 or so in Germany. Lidl does close to $22 billion in annual sales from 5,000 stores, with 2,000 in Germany, and is owned by Lidl & Schwarz Stiftung & Co., which is controlled by German billionaire Dieter Schwarz and his family.
