Tapping Radiators

When my CH comes on in the morning, the radiators make a tapping sound as they heat up. There's one tap about every 10-15 seconds but slows down and stops when they are hot. I assume its something to do with expansion, but can this noise be stopped?

There should be some small plastic shims which isolate the radiator from the brackets and stop most of the noise. Unfortunately these often aren't fitted. In my house I found that using a straw and squirting some WD40 (oil/grease/graphite would probably be better but the chance of a messy accident if you don't want to remove the radiator is considerably greater) on the mating face between the radiator and bracket stopped most of the noise - and to my surprise has had quite a long lasting effect. It isn't uncommon for noise to be generated as pipes move against notched joists. This then gets transmitted via the pipe work and it can be difficult to determine the origin.
