switching to Thunderbirds

I'm trying to set up Thunderbird and am out of my depth. It is askingfor the name of my news server (NTTP) What so I tell them? What other technical questions is it likely to throw up?

The name of your newsgroup provider, in the format "news.NAME.net or something very similar.

For instance, I use: news.individual.net (the Berlin Freie Universität).

The name you want to be known by?

The email address you want to use?

Relax. It isn't difficult.

You need to set up an account with a news host. I use news.eternal-september.org

It's been too long since I set mine up to remember. However, I do remember struggling to get it to properly log in and retrieve the list of newsgroups. It may have been a security type setup error.

If you haven't already done so, you need to get an account with a NNTP server. Likely candidates are Eternal September or News Individual Net. Once you've got an account set up with them, you should have the details that Thunderbird needs.

first you need to pick a news server, this might be

paid for, e.g. news.individual.net ?10/year

free but needs registration, e.g. news.eternal-september.org

free and doesn't need registration, e.g. news.aioe.org, but it's dead now, not sure if others exist that you can just use without registering? but if they do, you're likely to be sharing a server with spammers

which port number it's using 119 or 563 (or sometimes 443) whether or not it's using SSL, your username and password (with eternal september you have to tell it to always authenticate, or you won't see many groups)

that'll get you started, then refresh groups list and subscribe to the ones you want.

The issued is that tbird expects no login or password and then fails to connect, You have to say 'always use a password' and then it will ask you what to use, first time you connect.

Since this is probably going to come up a bit, here is a step by step with pictures:

I made this for someone else. Someone escaping the clutches of GG :-)

Paganini is used in the example, as it uses Port 119 and there are no certificates to ruin the experience. Since there is no account and password to enter, it does not need SSL/TLS for transmission of an account name and password.

If you were to use Mixmin, it too requires no account and password, but it uses Port 563, and that can cause occasional problems. Mixmin is not adjusted properly most of the time, which is why it is not used in example images.
