Switch orientation

Magneto switches appear to be reversed, but that is because you want the contacts open for the engine to work. Hence, open contacts, off for a light, is actually on for an engine with a magneto.

Up is towards the ceiling, down is towards the floor. Simples.

And if the switch is controlling the override for the Universe's self-destruct mechanism, then what?

Trial and error works well

If you cant work it out from the circuit diagram

So you honestly believe that a given selection of three switches that has two output states will have *two* output states for a *single combination* of input states?

Japanese go side to side. And I do mean switches.

Rod Speed presented the following explanation :

I set them up, so both switches up = off.

Then both switches down will also be off.

And how would these untrained people cope with rotary switches (which you will find in every house with grid-connected solar PV, AFAIK) ?

Not in my house. Original (green) bath has hot tap on the right. Refitted kitchen has hot tap (mixer) on the left.

What is the purpose of these switches?

Isolators? From a quick google I think they look like "machine shop" switches, with a big "1" and "0" for on and off.

How about not putting your fingers inside the socket when you do it? Darwin rules!

But people will try to change the bulb by touch, in the dark.

I once worked on a piece of (bespoke) equipment where the big red illuminated light on the front panel indicated that the the equipment was off and non-operational. The light went off when the switch turned it on. Maybe sensible for its application and operational location but not to good if you assume the opposite and are working on the equipment with the covers off :(

Still quite safe. Take the dead bulb out by gipping the dead bulb and then you know where the socket is for the new one.

Was the red light battery-powered (like emergency lighting) so it would stay on even if you unplugged the equipment?
