Agreed. That's the reasoning I've used to size the cable for my workshop rewire. The cost of the cable is a small part - digging the yard up is the major pain, so the bigger the better for the cable.
Utter bollocks - this article is 2014 anyeay. The car will communicate with the charger and agree on the maximum charge rate (pre-programmed in the charger).
A Tesla will charge on anything from 2kW upwards.

pply and I am looking for suggestions for the feed. Other than LED lighting provided through LED strips the main power draw will be the occasional use of a 2.3Kw dryer, a fridge yet to be bought, the electric door, power tool s and in the separate mancave mainly a computer and associated peripherals and a few low voltage items oh! and a kettle and 2 x 2Kw heaters.

Thinking ahead with the possibility o f electric and hybrid cars coming onto the market and possibly the developm ent of fast chargers for domestic use, I am minded to lay in the biggest ca ble possible but I am open to suggestions. The length of cable will be appr ox. 10m from CU to garage it will be fed through conduit attached to an ove rhead beam which will span the 1.2m gap between house and garage. So I woul d be interested in what other people have done or suggestions.I always figured a coke can cut spirally ought to do it, the flat strip sha pe giving more surface area per volume, improving cooling and thus increasi ng ampacity. But I wouldn't suggest giving it a go :)
Actually I'd suggest not giving it a go.
Harry can't do fast charging, he claims its all done by his solar panels and he only has 8kwp so about a kilowatt at most on most days in winter.
He probably uses an old smelly VW diesel then.
Perhaps he keeps it in the boot of his Rolls Royce ;-)
The rating of power tools is the maximum they draw. If that load was sustained, they'd burn out. They run for short period on a fraction of that load in practice. You have my commiserations for being so thick. .
If you buy your tools from Aldi... You should invest in some decent ones harry.
Try ripping or thicknessing some 8x2 oak boards - that will tend to push the tools to close to their limit.
(and if the lights go dim every time you push a board through your saw, you know you were a cheapskate when specifying the cable!)
Care to explain how that works on something like a dust extractor?
Or a heater when getting the workshop up to temperature?
Or when charging your toymota for 8 hours?

You should buy some decent tools that are rated for continuous use. Most of mine will run 24x7 if wanted them to.
It looks like it is 16mm2. As for threading it through conduit it only be one straight 1.2 m length. Thanks for all the advice.
