Simply because White Spirit and Turps substitute are so much cheaper than real turpentine. At Screwfix, White Spirit approx £2.00/litre inc. VAT, real turps £11.80/litre ex VAT

Real turpentine is made by distilling resin from trees. Necessarily expensive.
